Advertising Policy

This Royalty Free Christmas Clip Art site accepts advertising and other forms of compensation. Such compensation does not influence the information that we provide. We always give our honest findings and opinions.

Listings in the "Ads by Google" sections are not selected by us. They are automatically provided by Google.com, which sponsors ads on our site. Because the Google ads relate directly to the page content, they're actually helpful to visitors with the added options they provide.

The comments about Google also apply to Kontera, which connects ads related to the text on the page. Mouseover a double-underlined word and you'll see for yourself. The connection with the content is not quite as tight as it is with Google, but the ads can still be helpful.

Please do support our sponsors and follow our recommendations. It takes time and effort to deliver original site content, free to you. By supporting our sponsors, you make it all possible.

The following sections of this page provide reliable definitions of royalty free, copyright and public domain. Please read them carefully to make sure that when you download images, you are doing it legally.

Meaning Of Royalty Free

When people see Royalty Free Christmas Clip Art, some think it means free. Two of our recommended sources, Graphics Factory and iCLIPART, can provide images at pennies each, but they're not free.

Here's an excerpt from the Wikipedia entry on royalty free...

Royalty-free is a term employed in negotiating the right to use creative content, such as photographs, video, or music. The term royalty-free means that once the content is licensed under a set of guidelines, the licensee is normally free to use it in perpetuity without paying additional royalty charges.
The concept of royalty-free comes from copyright, a statute that allows authors and publishers of works to be the sole arbiter of the exploitation of that work, and to set fees associated with that work. The economic incentives afforded by copyright give artists one way to make a living through their creative works.
Royalty-free does not mean a user is free to take and use whatever content they find available to them. It only refers to a specific licensing contract between two entities. The licensor, usually the content creator, always retains all copyright to the content, including the ability to distribute it, or allow redistribution.

So there you have it. When we speak of royalty free Christmas clip art, it means images for which you pay a one-time licensing fee to use the image, which is still owned by the entity that licensed it.

Meaning Of Copyright

When you download images from our recommended suppliers, Graphics Factory and iCLIPART, the owner of the work, the copyright holder remains the owner. Here's an excerpt from the Wikipedia entry on copyright...

Copyright is a set of exclusive rights granted to the author or creator of an original work, including the right to copy, distribute and adapt the work. Copyright does not protect ideas, only their expression or fixation. In most jurisdictions copyright arises upon fixation and does not need to be registered.
Copyright owners have the exclusive statutory right to exercise control over copying and other exploitation of the works for a specific period of time, after which the work is said to enter the public domain.
Uses which are covered under limitations and exceptions to copyright, such as fair use, do not require permission from the copyright owner. All other uses require permission and copyright owners can license or permanently transfer or assign their exclusive rights to others.

Works that are not protected by copyright may be in the public domain.

Meaning Of Public Domain

Works are in the public domain if there is no known owner. Here's an excerpt from the Wikipedia entry on the meaning of public domain...

Works are in the public domain if they are not covered by intellectual property rights at all, if the intellectual property rights have expired, and/or if the intellectual property rights are forfeited. Examples include the English language, the formulae of Newtonian physics, as well as the works of Shakespeare and the patents over powered flight.
In a general context public domain may refer to ideas, information and works that are "publicly available", but in the context of intellectual property law, which includes copyright, patents and trademarks, public domain refers to works, ideas, and information which are intangible to private ownership and/or which are available for use by members of the public.

Warning! It's very tempting to grab images for free that are supposedly in the public domain. But it's extremely risky. See for yourself. Google the term "images settlement demand letters" and see what turns up in the Search Engine results.

It's much easier and cheaper to get your royalty free Christmas clip art images for a minimal fee from reliable sources (such as Graphics Factory and iCLIPART) and know that you're on safe legal ground.
